From June 15 to Sept. 30, 2024, the exhibition space of the Palazzo dell’Opera del Duomo in Pisa’s Piazza dei Miracoli will host the exhibition “The Tower in the Mirror. The Many Lives of the Bell Tower of Pisa Cathedral,” curated by Stefano Renzoni, conceived and organized by the Opera della Primaziale Pisana on the occasion of the 850th anniversary of the laying of the monument’s foundation stone. <\/p>\n\n

Through more than 100 works including drawings, engravings, paintings, sculptures and photographs ranging from the 13th century to contemporary times, the exhibition aims to illustrate how the perception of the world’s most famous Bell Tower has changed over the centuries. The figurative arts bear witness to how much the identity of the Tower and the meaning attributed to it has profoundly changed as sensibilities and times have changed.<\/p>\n\n

Interpretations of the Tower of Pisa<\/h3>\n\n

Wide space is devoted to contemporary artists’ interpretation of the Tower, in the sign of a continuity that offers important food for thought. Starting from the real passion of the artists of the Second Futurism, such as Viareggio’s Umberto Bonetti, to Magritte and Keith Haring. Also on display are works by living artists such as Giuseppe Bartolini, Gianni Lucchesi and Francesco Barbieri, who still measure themselves against the Campanile theme.<\/p>\n\n

Artist Gianni Lucchesi creates his personal interpretation of the famous Tower of Pisa by assembling all the elements that make up his signature style and those representing the tower’s history. Lucchesi breaks down the structure of the tower into numerous thin marble slabs stacked on top of each other, like heavy pages of a past that speaks to the present. Steady, the man sitting on top scanning the horizon, reminiscent of OPERAE, the sculpture exhibited in Genoa by the artist in collaboration with the Rossetti Gallery in 2023.<\/p>\n\n

The sculpture is now part of the private collection of the Opera del Duomo Palace in Pisa.<\/p>\n\n
