Genoa – Archivio Storico

Genoa and the Belle Époque. Urban furnishings in the city’s aesthetic between decorum and elegance

Starting in the mid-19th century, Genoa underwent impressive transformations to its urban fabric, becoming a veritable open-air laboratory for generations of engineers and architects.

Street furniture, rightly considered a public asset, had to embody aesthetic value in the creation of “ideal beauty”. The repertoire of artefacts designed and partly realised, testimony to the sensitivity and attention of our predecessors, is considerable. Nothing was overlooked or left to chance, whether commissioned by the public administration or created by private citizens, subject to municipal authorisation.

Over 30 artists are featured in the exhibition: old masters, modern and contemporary artists, emerging and established artists, designers and activists, spanning six centuries of history, inviting visitors to reflect on how the experience of war shapes the emotions, perceptions and sense of belonging of those who live through it.

Ascona – Museo Comunale d’Arte Moderna

Joana Vasconcelos. Flowers of my desire

One of the most influential figures in international contemporary art, she has participated in three Venice Biennales and exhibited in prestigious venues around the world. She was the first woman to hold her own exhibition at the Palace of Versailles and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

Renowned for her monumental sculptures and immersive installations, Joana Vasconcelos decontextualises everyday objects and updates the concept of art, craftsmanship and design, establishing a dialogue between the private sphere and public space, popular heritage and high culture. With lightness and irony, she addresses issues related to female identity, consumer society and collective memory.

Exhibition project by Giuseppe Gabellone, designed specifically for the company’s premises and historic cellars, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The intervention unfolds like a visual narrative through light, sculpture and photography, in which every trace, carefully arranged in space, converges towards a single goal: to reveal a horizon – understood as a line, a destination or a mysterious apparition – capable of engaging the viewer on an experiential level, gradually unveiling the historical production spaces of the Bosca winery.

The recommended book

Irriverenti

Giuseppe Nifosi

Editori Laterza

This book recounts the exploits, stunts, provocations, and courageous or transgressive denunciations of a daring group of artists, some conceptual, others pop, others performers and graffiti artists, active between the late 1950s and the present day. Through their seemingly mocking art, allergic to convention, they have tackled fundamental issues of our time – gender violence, illness, AIDS and death, consumerism, war – and have called into question the role and very nature of art.
