“Napoleone” – Blueseries by Silvio Porzionato

Blueseries – Napoleone by Silvio Porzionato

Silvio Porzionato pays homage to the masterpieces of the great masters of classical art that have guided his path as an artist.

French artist Jacques Louis David, influenced by neoclassical theories, constructed an artistic iconography where the main subjects embodied the ideal model of the hero.

It is the early 1800s when Napoleon comes to power and commissions the artist to paint several equestrian portraits, in which the French emperor is depicted crossing the St. Bernard Pass riding his steed.

The entire composition is designed to maximize the dynamism and boldness of the subject. In addition, the emperor’s name is engraved on the rocks in the foreground, along with those of Hannibal and Charlemagne, a stratagem that also conceptually places Napoleon and history’s greatest leaders on the same plane.

In Blueseries, Silvio Porzionato deliberately maintains the actual measurements of one of the versions of the famous equestrian portrait. First, the subject is placed in an entirely different architectural context related to the artist’s own experiences to achieve a very deep perspective to further enhance the subject.

The contemporary Napoleon emerges with all the pride and elegance that Porzionato’s blue can give him, dominating the scene among sections of the Trevi Fountain, fragments of capitals from the Capitoline Museums, and perspectives from the Reggia di Venaria.

Through the combination of all these elements of historical and artistic reference, Porzionato achieves his goal. His style is unique and makes Napoleon’s iconography current and timeless.
