Blueseries – La Pietà by Silvio Porzionato
Silvio Porzionato reinterprets the masterpieces of the great masters of classical art who guided his path as an artist.
The Vatican Pietà, a marble sculpture by Michelangelo Buonarroti, can be dated around 1498 and is kept in St.Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican in Rome.
La Pietà by Michelangelo
It is considered to be the first masterpiece of the artist, who sculpted it in his early twenties, completely revolutionising the rigid iconographic scheme of the early Renaissance that wanted the body of Jesus stiffened in a horizontal position and that of Mary, by contrast, seated and vertical.
But Michelangelo’s revolution is not stopping at composition, he gives a new feeling of touching compassion and intimacy.

Porzionato drills this figurative power into canvas, re-proposing the same pyramidal composition, with deep chiaroscuro in the drapery of the robes and in the grip of Mary’s hand on Jesus’ side; two elements that give a strong expressiveness to the work, skilfully respecting the model.
In the background, a wall with a round arch and pillars with protruding capitals maintain the Renaissance atmosphere.
The artist seems to break the visual plane by shattering it into several parts, as a result of observation from different viewpoints. A turn towards Picassian cubism in his work.
