Hashi – personal exhibition by Tom Porta
On the occasion of Tom Porta’s solo exhibition “Hashi,” all of the artist’s new works will be placed in the sixteenth-century underground rooms of the Rossetti underground.
The “Hashi” exhibition spans five series and plaster sculptures. Along with the works on canvas and sculptures, sketches of paintings made by the artist will be on display. In addition, the scenery will be enhanced by Virginia Cafiero’s paper sculptural compositions.
HASHI SERIES, THE BRIDGE
“Hashi” in the Japanese language means ”the bridge.” The bridge element constitutes a crossing point, not only physical but also metaphorical, in ancient Japanese culture. It is passable in both directions, such as in gardens to pass over waterways during meditation paths.
Tom Porta’s Japan is not imagined and idealized but a collection of memories, emotions and impressions, gathered from life. In the series dedicated to Geishas, the artist expresses a homage to a land he knows and for which he has esteem and respect. Ethereal women who seem to emerge from an old photo, whose worn edges fail to engulf them. They are not fading into the past because their grace survives time.
